Bush Performance Poll in the Real World

Polls out evaluating Bush’s conduct of war on terrorism, war in Iraq, etc. Ever notice how the pollsters shape their questions to get the answers they want?

If you want to evaluate how successful Bush’s war on terrorism is, there’s a very simple set of criteria: before/after.

Before 9/11, terrorist activity against Americans and American interests both abroad and at home had escalated for years. However, American response had varied. This is an important point.

In 1904, a 64-year-old Trenton man, Ian Perdicaris, and his stepson were kidnapped from their villa in Tangiers by Sheik Raisuli, leader of a local Berber tribe in revolt against the despotic Sultan of Morocco. Democratic President Teddy Roosevelt’s response was to call out the Marines and send a fleet of seven battleships steaming for the Moroccan coast. Ahead flew a message to the Sultan: “Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!”

A few days later, Perdicaris and his stepson were free, and Raisuli and the Sultan were on terms—without the necessity of fleet intervention. The Sultan, as many others, preferred to avoid American action. It later turned out that Perdicaris was actually no longer an American citizen, though that fact was not made known until long after the deaths of all the principals – but the principle was clear to the world: America takes care of its own. Fer sure! America spoke softly and carried a big stick – and it was clear that we would use it in defense of our citizens and our soil.

In the years before 9/11, terrorists attacked our consulates abroad, bombed commercial airplanes, attacked our barracks, downed a Blackhawk on a humanitarian mission, kidnapped Americans, bombed several important sites here on the mainland, and actually destroyed a US Naval ship of the line [the Cole], all with very little reprisal from America. President Bill Clinton declared, "If, as it now appears, this was an act of terrorism, it was a despicable and cowardly act. We will find out who was responsible and hold them accountable." The world laughed to hear us bluster. Guards on the USS Cole were not allowed to fire on the bomb boat as it approached because our rules of engagement at that time did not allow us to protect ourselves. Like simple minded fools, we continued to provide aide and support to the countries which were attacking us, probably buying the very supplies used to kill our citizens. America had become a country who talked loudly and apparently had no stick.

That gradual escalation without adequate deterrent, reprisal, non-verbal response from America was directly responsible for 9/11. In countries where the level of civilization requires that one not only show one’s stick but use it frequently, America’s propensity for civilized conversation made us a laughingstock, a butt for jokes, and a natural target. We would turn the other cheek? Very well, they said, all the better for us. Hit ‘em again.

Another factor was a group of liberal apologists who took the line that America was at fault for all the injuries done us, and loudly bewailed the wrongs that America did the world by being rich and exporting its culture, many of whom were at the same time making BIG BUCKS exporting that very culture in movies and music. They supported the victim mentality and justified the actions against innocent Americans, whose money has been going to all these countries in aid and support for generations. Of course, their actions made them popular overseas, and richer.

When President Bush stood up and said: “If you aren’t for us, you’re against us. If you are a terrorist, or a terrorist supporter, if you are a country, or a country’s ruler, or a banker, or a contributor, giving aid or support to a terrorist, we’re coming after you,” and then promptly did exactly that, and continued to do exactly that, he produced a situation of unparalleled safety in this country, for the people in this country.

The terrorists saw America’s fleet steaming toward the coast of Morocco again. They heard “Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!” and they have seen the proof of it. In spite of everything the treasonous, traitorous power brokers could do to pull President Bush from the path of safety for this country, he has remained steadfast, and for that reason, there have been no more bombings, no more easy access, no more careless arrogance and disrespect for stupid Americans.

Is it enough? Barely. Could it be better? Yes. The Democrats who are so concerned with their power could start working for those who elected them, and stop with their death-dealing spinning. We are in a life and death struggle for survival. Power and who wins the next election is a minor point, when the issue of whether or not you can sleep peacefully in your bed without fear of fusion bombs or biowarfare is totally real and out there. Close the borders; export the illegal aliens; allow legals in to work; let the Democrats know for once and for all that we are a nation of laws equally for everybody, and that American citizens are first to be protected before non-citizens who desire to take advantage of American benefits – that would maybe keep some potential bombers/invaders out, and certainly some criminals like the cop-killers in California we’ve been reading about!

As long as President Bush’s war effort keeps them on the run over there, we’re safer here. That’s the object, and he’s accomplishing it, against heavy odds and Democratic opposition.

So how do we rate President Bush’s conduct of the war on terrorism? Primo! Outstanding. Right up there with Teddy Roosevelt. Beats everybody else.

Do we think he’s doing a great job? YES.

Do we care what the rest of the world, including terrorist supporters, think about his performance? NO.

And that’s our Bush performance poll in the Real World, my friends.

It's refreshing to see the truth in print. 9/11 changed my life. I am no longer on the sidelines in lock-step with the emotion-based left.

I recall the inscription on the Tower at the University of Texas - "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

Keep writing. Keep telling the truth.

your missing the point - nobody in the world is saying that America (as are all the countries of the world) shouldn't be fighting terrorism. and everybody was on your side when you attacked Afghanistan.
that was the "Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead!" line and the whole world understood. Lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and eventual agression on this sovereign country, are the things that turned the world against America, and are the reason why Bush ought to be impeached, as well as prosecuted and sentenced in the International criminal court in Hague.
now? now the terrorist movements are on the rise, and USA can be expecting new attacks. Why? because Bush divided the strongest force in the world, because he is unable to defeat "A small army of partisans" with the army that is best equipped at the moment to do so. And that is a sign of weakness apparent to anyone it seems except the US Government. Why else would Iran be allowed to continue with obvious nuclear weapons research, with just "strong words" from Ms. Rice to counter the threats against jews in the middle east?

Hats off to you, MaggieChurch!! Thanks for telling the truth and I urge you to keep it up. I think the point that many people, including one of your "commentors", are missing about Iraq, is that Hussein is a war criminal which is proven by so many mass graves. Weapons of Mass destruction? Did he really need them? Was he murdering his own people? YES. Do the Islamic groups hate us because of IRAQ? NO. They hate us because of the points you made. Thanks for speaking out!

In the real world the united states has consistently installed, armed, trained and equipped brutal dictators from panama, haiti and other countries on this hemosphere to aiding the sha of iran(provoking the hostage crises and Bush Sr.'s cia cooking up the infamous Iran/contra affair)to arming Saddam Hussein during the Iran/Iraq war. it is your resposibility as an American to pay attention to reality and stop cheerleading for self-interested propogandists like the Bin Laden family's long time friend and business associate G.W. Bush.

Curious that you forget recent history of GWB freeing 40 million Afghanis and Iraqis, denuclearizing Libya's Qadaffy, assisting in booting Syria out of Lebanon, exposing/demoting/disempowering Khan in Pakistan (the nuclear mad scientist), giving Syria's Assad the runs prior to his upcoming overthrow, preparing for the overthrow of Iran's Murderocracy, squeezing Saudi Arabia and Egypt to begin democratization under justice law, etc.
There is little of the negative to criticize since 2001, compared to the gargantuan positives.

bu(ll)sh-it heaven (see, I atleast point out the commentator), Bush lied and that's it. If he said, yes let's bring down the dictator, it would've been fine, probably a lot more people would support it (UN to begin with) but from the first instant everybody only saw America and your oil interests as the reason for the attack.
how can an american like you know what the world thinks, especially why the rest of the world hates you? majority of americans are so easily manipulated into beliefs that have nothing to do with reality (like Bush telling everyone he was ordered by God to free Iraq for instant), and are just like Bush (illiterate) that you were the ONLY ones to except the SECOND explanation of the war, after they admitted they lied about the weapons of mass destruction. And you people just chose to forget about that!!! after Clinton lied about those blowjobs, that was inexcusable and he oughtta have been impeached???! Who in their right mind wouldn't hate you!!!?
now i have a lot of greate american friends and love them all, but even they admit faced with facts how idiotic american public behaves. not to forget that Bush was never supposed to be the president in the first place, he lied his way into the office but that's well, old news, just like Cheney is, and Abramavoff-Delay stuff will be soon.
famously, remember one thing: Bush wasn't the one to do that what you said - it was his government. and a lot of those things havent happened yet, have they? how are they going to overthrow iran when they cant even overthrow insurgents next door? Vietnam would be nothing compared to what would happen if you invaded Iran at this point. Pray that it doesn't, but atleast then MAYBE you would send that idiot to jail.

Keep going with the truth, this blog is awesome. You've already got the conspiracy crazies like Silentmajority crawling out from the woodwork. Bin Ladens associate, lol. Sometimes you feel like a nut I guess.

You've even stirred up old America hating Emir. Poor Emir thinks the US should put a halt to Iran, so even he knows the UN is impotent, but still he wishes they were more behind us in Iraq before we acted. Any twist to make America and Bush look bad. Well, it's probably jealoust, he likely lives in a country armed with 2 pitchforks and a mishapen rock.

You really do live in a fantasy world, just like all of the others who continue to blindly support Bush as he tramples everything the Constitution stands for.

Feel free to continue living in your dream world while the rest of us continue to expose the hypocrisy and criminal activity of the Bush administration and its pathetic sycophants.

I think you're all just arguing semantics. Does it really matter how we got into the war in Iraq anymore? Not really. Even though I'm of the opinion that Bush is a scathing liar and an incompetent leader, the debate about how we got into Iraq is no longer relevant. We have to finish what we started (like it or not) and get the job done. The problem is Bush defines getting the job done as a free democratic Iraq. Realistically that's never going to happen and each and every one of you know it. Iraq may start out with a democratically elected government, but that government will quickly turn into something resembling Iran or the Taliban government in Afghanistan. True representative government is something that has to come from pressures within a country, like the yearning for representation from the young colonies of America. Any democracy that is set up in a country where such forces do not pre-exist is doomed to fail.

I also think more attention needs to be paid to the wire tapping story that's emerged lately. I agree that if a known member of al-Qaeda (sp?) is on the phone to someone here in America then that called should be tapped, but there is absolutely no reason to tap the phone without a warrant. Why is the president breaking the law? Why aren't people upset by this? President Clinton wasn't impeached because he got a BJ, he was impeached because he lied about it and perjury is against the law. Wire tapping American Citizens is a far more serious offense!! Why is this not being investigated with the same vigor Clinton was back in the 90's? I'll tell you why. The Republican controlled congress is too busy saving it's own ass and covering up all the money it took as bribes from Abramovoff and others to start a major investigation of the President.

"...let the Democrats know for once and for all that we are a nation of laws equally for everybody..."

Except for the President.

And it's indescribably invalidating to read text that addresses "the Democrats" (or "the Republicans" or "the Neo-Cons", or "the Evangelical Christians", and especially "the Nazis"). You lose me and every other critical reader when you use demeaning generalities.

If you're disappointed with specific Democrats' behavior, go ahead and name them. Without qualification, it's difficult to tell whether you mean:
* Elected officials who ran under the Democratic ticket
* Personnel appointed by an elected Democrat
* Registered Democrats (doesn't work in every state, i.e., Texas doesn't require party registry)
* People who have voted for Democratic candidates at some point or points in the past
* People who contribute to the Democratic Party, or to a candidate affiliated with the Democratic Party.

I suspect you mean to say Liberals. Now, that's not a party affiliation in this country, but I'd still prefer more complete qualification. It's obvious who you favor in your writing--why not be specific about who you don't?

You are obviously trying to create a career for yourself by showing you can whip up racist hysteria in support of Republican candidates.

There is an endless supply of GOP money to support hacks like you, and, even though your writing style is pedantic and dull, I'm sure well-heeled GOP supporters will eventually shell something out to keep you going.

Good luck, and spread some of that corporate swag around to people who need it!

Dan,

Now isn't that a typical Liberal for you. When you cannot debate the issue call them a RACIST.

No wonder Mainstream America has left the democratic party. You have no ideas, you just name call.

Give it up. BUSH won the election. PERIOD.

Well, I hope you don't mind but I strongly disagree with your analysis and some of your "facts."
I don't want to get into it, I am sure I wouldn't change your views and you sure won't change mine either.
Just suffice it to say I think Bush is a lousy president, our policies in Iraq do not have and never did anything to do with terrorism and that there was a lot more going on to counter terrorism in the previous administration than people know, they didn't crow about it in public as GW does. And if GW and his bunch had not so arrogantly ignored the intelligence developed on Bin Laden 9-11 could have possibly been prevented. And, once again, Itaq had nothing to do with 9-11.

Brethren and Sistern: To continue to perpetrate the lie that Bush lied about WMD in Iraq and that we went to war in Iraq in 2003 primarily for oil, is to feign ignorance of the various USA bipartisan committees which debunked the 'Bush Lied' canard, as well as the Butler Commission in Britain which came to similar conclusions -- and the fact that that we would have been getting more oil from Iraq had we agreed to drop the sanctions imposed on SoDamn Insane's Iraq because he wouldn't stop impeding UN inspections for remaining WMD known to exist by SoDamn's admissions following exposure of this fact by some of his inner circle.
The joint resolution of Congress spelled out about 23 reasons for overthrowing SoDamn Insane -- position promoted as well by Clinton and his clodhorts in 1998-2001.
And we HAVE found WMD in Iraq since the 2003 invasion: 1500 gallons of toxic gas/liquid precursors in military bunkers, almost 2 tons of partially enriched uranium (suitable as is for 'dirty' bombs), plans for restart of WMD programs (Hans Blix, Kay, and Duelfer reports).

Facts, as examples of Truth and Reality, do not disappear when denied. They serve as guides to future action when placed in proper context for action based on principles of humane justice.

The USA-driven coalition forces have saved 10's of 1000's of Iraqi lives by deposing Husseins's murderocracy -- see www.LogicTimes.com for their explication.
"The fault, dear Brutish, is not in our stars, but in ourselves if we are knaves rather than simply naive."

Blogger FamouslyUnknown said...

And not only that! To call SoDamn Insane's Iraq a sovereign country is to display a bad case of moral/ethical blindness. SoDamn's Iraq was being held hostage by a bunch of murderous sociopaths. Murderous to the dirge of over 300,000 Iraqis. Our invasion was a life-saving hostage-rescue operation and an enema to remove the butt-brained Baathists.

Excellent point you make there.

We certainly haven't seen a reocurrance of terrorism in the US, and outside of Iraq, we don't see the same sort of open season on US citizens that was commonplace in the 80s and 90s.

While one cannot draw too close a connection between Iraq and 9/11 itself, removing Hussein certainly served as a catalyst to address some of the underlying issues. Libya turned over it's nuclear weapons program, democratic reformers in Iran have been bolder in challenging the status quo, Iraq has held three regularly-scheduled elections (probably a first for an Islamic nation in that region), and the Syrians decided it was better to pull their troops out of Lebanon to their west to keep an eye on the US forces to their east.

Would Hussein's removal have prevented 9/11? Not likely, but the changes that have taken place in that region have helped to change the culture, giving those who support democracy and moderation a stronger voice, which undermines the influence of the mad mullahs who are part of, or support, militant groups like Al-Queda.

World War II helped lay the foundation for stable democracies in the Far East and Europe. The current efforts will, with luck, bear fruit in the years to come in the Islamic world.

The measure of George W Bush's success as a president will be the number of terrorist bombs exploded on American soil since 9/11. Unlike the Clinton years, we have seen no bombed out consulates, no World Trade Center disasters, no military barracks bombed, no more planes hijacked, and no other naval ships destroyed. Not to mention no BlackHawks downed. Since GW threw down the gauntlet and told the world and its leaders that their immunity was kaput, lost, gone, the "gentlemen's agreement" no longer in place there has there not been a single hit here on American soil- or abroad. As a result, the diabetics, the heart patients, all of us who need specific meds and other special care do not have to sweat out where our next dose is coming from. That's worth a lot. Pregnant women and nursing mothers, people with small children and elderly parents, and others with special needs do not have to frantically worry about what to do --we don't have a war zone here. The next time one of you hyenas open your mouths to cavil about GW, stop and think about what it would be like to live in Beirut during the fire time - and thank GOD we had a man in office when we needed one. Let he among you who could have done better cast the first and last stones. And the rest of you keep still until you can do the job you talk so mighty about.
